Studying for the ARE can be a draining process. Even when you reach the accomplishment of passing your first exam, there are 5 more behind it waiting to be tackled. It’s not for the faint of heart- that’s for sure.
One of the most important things to remember during this entire journey is to stay in the correct mindset. A winning mindset is a key part of success.
So you’re probably wondering, “how do I get into this winning mindset?”
First, you have to remind yourself that this is a goal that you want to reach. Have a clear and distinct image of your end goal and don’t let it out of sight. Even when the nights get long and the going gets tough, remind yourself of why you want to achieve licensure. Remember how great that accomplishment will make you feel, and what doors it may be able to open for you.
Second, be optimistic. Try not to look at studying as the burden it probably is. Instead, try to look at it as a way of you becoming a better Architect. Try to get yourself motivated and excited to learn something new or understand a topic better.
Third, make realistic, clearly-defined goals for yourself throughout the process. It helps us mentally to feel like we are achieving small victories along the way. Look at everything from your daily study schedule to your first “Pass” as a potential victory.
Fourth, be self-aware. Know your weaknesses, and don’t rely on your strengths. Don’t be too proud to review content that you “already know”. Reinforcement never hurt anyone. Furthermore, be sure to spend extra time on your weaknesses. Don’t avoid them until the last second, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Last but not least, BELIEVE that you can do it. You have to build yourself up. No more saying “I’m not a good test taker” or “I’m never going to pass”….Tell yourself that you CAN do it. Start convincing your subconscious by saying “when” I pass….not “if” I pass.
If you can build up your confidence through the studying process you will go in stronger on test day.
Don’t waste any more time…Start getting into the right frame of mind today and go conquer your next exam!
